VW brand gets outsider as powertrain chief

Blumenroeder joins VW from IAV .

FRANKFURT — Volkswagen Group named an executive from outside the company to head powertrain development at its core VW brand.

Former Daimler engineer Kurt Blumenroeder will take up the post on Jan. 1 as the automaker seeks to move on from a scandal that involved manipulating software in up to 11 million diesel engines sold worldwide to cheat emissions tests.

Blumenroeder moves to the role from German automotive engineering company IAV, where he was chairman of the management board. VW owns half of IAV.

At VW, he will succeed Friedrich Eichler, who became VW brand’s head of chassis development in September.

VW Group’s diesel scandal led to several resignations as authorities in the U.S. and Germany investigate who was responsible for the cheating. Former Audi manager Giovanni Pamio was released on bail last week following his arrest on suspicion of fraud and false advertising in connection with the scandal. VW Group’s former top engineer, Wolfgang Hatz, who denies playing a pivotal role in the scandal, remains in custody in Munich as prosecutors continue their investigations.

Blumenroeder began his career at Daimler in 1990. He was head of Mercedes-Benz technology before joining IAV in 2005.

At VW, he will succeed Friedrich Eichler, who became VW brand’s head of chassis development in September. Eichler began his career at VW Group in 1993 working in engine development. He left to head powertrain development at Mercedes’ AMG performance arm in 2007 and rejoined VW in 2013 to run gasoline engine development.

Eichler became VW brand’s head of chassis development as part of a wider shuffle of product development executives in August. VW said the reorganization was part of its preparation for a move to future mobility technologies such as electrification and autonomous driving.
